Born in Turin from a Foggian family, he trained professionally at the drama school of the Teatro Stabile di Torino. He debuted in 1972 in political drama film The Working Class Goes to Heaven directed by Elio Petri and next year he is a leading actor in Property Is No Longer a Theft.
His career ranges between cinema and television; winner of the Silver Ribbon as best actor for the biopic tv movie Ligabue (1977), he starred in Circuito chiuso (1978), I problemi di Don Isidoro (1978) and the miniseries Martin Eden (1979). He is also in horror movie Suspiria (1977) directed by Dario Argento. He works with the most important directors like Mario Monicelli, Giuliano Montaldo and Luigi Magni. He starred in numerous theater plays including: The Clown by Heinrich Böll; The diary of madman of Gogol '; One, No One and One Hundred Thousand and The Late Mattia Pascal by Luigi Pirandello, Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? by Edward Albee and Richard III by William Shakespeare.
